Flamethrowers was fearsome weapon spreading fire up to 40 metres.
Flamethrowers
Flamethrowers were first developed by the German army as a harsh way to kill the enemy at close range. Pressurized air, carbon dioxide or nitrogen was used to force oil through a nozzle these were sparked by a small charge and this became a jet of flame.
They were only used for close range combat with the first flame-throwers having a range of about 25 metres, which later improved to around 40 metres. Although they created fear in the enemy trenches, they were unable to be used in ‘No Man’s Land’ in they became an easy target for rifles and machine guns.
