Tanks and barbed wire were both ver effective in WW1
Other
Barbed wire was used by both forces as it meant that the opposition could not launch an infantry attack on their trench. Although soldiers would go out to cut them during the night, they often became tangled. Artillery fire and tanks were used to break through the barbed wire, except these efforts only made thing worse.
Tanks were generally not used at the beginning of the war as they were slow, easily broke down and often got stuck in ‘No Man’s Land’ as they weren’t powerful enough to drive through the crater holes and mud.
They were first used in the Battle of Cambrai, when 476 tanks lined the front and advanced to the enemy’s trenches. They were very effective at first but they were unable to consolidate the advances.
