Rifles and pistols were the standard military weapons, which were used for the general soldiers. They generally had a range of about 500m to 100m depending on the type of target (singular or attacking line).
The rifle’s used were reasonably ineffective while soldiers were running as they had to fire them from the hip, whereas the soldiers defending their trench had a much steadier and more accurate aim. This made it difficult for soldiers to shoot down onto the trench and therefore attacking in trench warfare was made very difficult.
